Kristin Hackler is an award-winning journalist and ghostwriting manager behind numerous Amazon bestsellers published by Advantage and ForbesBooks authors.
Before joining Advantage|ForbesBooks in 2015, Kristin served as a ghostwriter and content writer for an international civil plaintiff’s firm, creating content for articles published in Trial Lawyer magazine and by the American Bar Association Journal. She has ghostwritten for several national and international corporations, including Home Depot, eBay, and Care2, as well as served as a content specialist for Amazon’s CreateSpace division.
Before becoming a ghostwriter, Kristin served as managing editor for a Charleston-area news firm for eight years, growing the business from a single, twelve-page newspaper to three bi-weekly newspapers covering seven of South Carolina’s most affluent islands.
In her critical role of Publishing Manager, Kristin delegates and oversees all tasks related to our Members’ book publication. She works in conjunction with our authors and internal teams to ensure that deadlines are seamlessly met. Prior to joining Advantage|ForbesBooks, she spent 8 years with Amazon’s independent publishing leg, CreateSpace, primarily as a Design Coordinator. Kristin holds a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts from the Art Institute of Charleston. A new mother, the South Carolina native enjoys the outdoors, staying active, and painting in her spare time.
Elaine is the “utility player of publishing,” deftly managing department logistics. Her primary function is to liaise with our ghostwriting partner – there to assist with transcripts, oversee book orders, process freelance invoices, and manage the editorial interview calendar. She continually works to streamline our ghostwriting partner’s publishing process. This requires constant interfacing with the design and editorial teams, our authors, and a bench of freelancers.
She diligently manages ghostwriting projects from start to finish, creating detailed timelines to ensure that projects remain on track. To launch a project, she conducts a kick-off call with the Member, giving her the opportunity to review the minutia of the timeline and discuss printing details. She works closely with our Editorial Manager to ensure that ghostwriter deliverables are completed on time and delivered to the Member for review. Once the editorial portion of the process is completed, she introduces the Member to our in-house design team. The design team crafts a cover to the Member’s liking, at which point Elaine walks them through the distribution and printing process. Hands-on involvement with distribution is unique to the Members whose books are produced through our ghostwriting partner.
Elaine attended Wafford College and obtained a Bachelor of Arts in History. After interning with a publishing company, she served as the editor of her college newspaper, The Old Gold & Black. This signaled the start of her interest in the publishing space. Prior to joining the Advantage|ForbesBooks team, she served as an HR analyst with a Columbia-based staffing agency. In this role, she coordinated and managed compliance databases across all lines of service within the company. This honed her ability to manage many moving parts and maintain the integrity of reports and databases, which she leverages in her current role. Agatha Christie is among Elaine’s favorite authors.

Nate employs his editorial expertise to guide Members through the creation of their book. He conducts quality assurance checks on completed manuscripts. He is regularly checking in by phone with ghostwriters and Members, while delivering feedback to writers. Each work day begins with “Scrum,” the publishing department huddle to review what was accomplished the day prior, and what is planned for that day. A significant portion of his day thereafter is spent reading drafts, holding meetings, and answering questions from Members and writers.
Nate’s role demands the ability to recognize when content is up to par. At the outset of a project, he meets with the potential Member to discuss their book idea and business goals. He has a hands-on role in the review process—overseeing manuscripts in the outline, developmental edit, and line edit stages. He works closely with our team of Account Managers and Member Development Reps to ensure a quality experience for each author.
Having graduated Indiana University with a journalism degree, Nate exclusively sought out a path in publishing. He has worked in editorial departments for the entirety of his career. His first role was with a self-publishing firm, where he worked for three years. Upon moving to Charleston, he joined Advantage|ForbesBooks as an Associate Editor, before moving into the Editorial Manager role. A naturally voracious reader, he enjoys getting to pour over manuscripts each day. He is certified in book indexing, a skill he has put to use for select authors. Nate names J.R.R. Tolkien as his favorite author.
As an Associate Editor, Laura Rashley spends her time making sure every manuscript and cover is layout-ready and typo-free per the Chicago Manual of Style.
Prior to joining the Advantage|ForbesBooks Team, Laura worked for Pounce Cat Café where they partnered with a local shelter to adopt out Charleston’s homeless cats while providing customers a relaxing place to drink wine, eat pastries, and meet their new feline companion. She was also Assistant Editor and Editor-In-Chief of Miscellany, a literary and art magazine which she expanded on a national level over a period of two and a half years.
As a writer herself, Laura has had her poetry published in Poetry Quarterly, Fall Lines Magazine, and Memoryhouse Magazine. She was also named a US Presidential Scholar in the Arts, and a YoungArts finalist, for her poetry in 2013. Her work has been displayed in the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. Laura attended the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities, a competitive, residential high school, where she focused in creative writing. After graduation, she went on to get her Bachelor of Arts in English from the College of Charleston.
Megan is devoted to the creation of visually striking books for our Members. Since joining Advantage as a Production Assistant in 2012, she rose to a senior graphic design role before assuming the role of Creative Manager in 2018. At present, she handles interior layout, ebook conversion, cover design, and marketing graphics to compliment Members’ books. During an average work day, she focuses heavily on interior layout and spends a great deal of her time in InDesign.
Her role is extremely detail-oriented, as layouts must adhere to strict requirements and draw emphasis to editorial minutia. When crafting covers, she collaborates with the Member to conceive something genuinely eye-catching. Her creative dexterity is leveraged to create unique covers that both capture the author’s message and grab a prospective reader’s attention.
Megan attended the College of Charleston where she studied Art History. She joined Advantage when it was a team of 12, and has risen through the ranks over the last six years. She deeply enjoys the opportunity to help Members bring their vivid stories and ideas to life. She was nominated for a Spark Award last year, and names Kurt Vonnegut as her favorite author.
Carly serves as a Senior Designer on our formidable graphic design team. She collaborates with our authors to visually capture the spirit and content of their book. Each cover receives careful attention, with Carly typically conducting a “cover call” to kick off the process. These calls, in addition to thorough questionnaires, allow her to explore the author’s stylistic preferences and sift through their ideas. She shows sample covers to learn what they stylistically gravitate towards. This involved process gives authors a hands-on role in the creation of their cover. Carly’s position demands a mastery of Photoshop, inDesign, and graphic design as a discipline and art form. The ability to connect with each author is equally important, as it helps her to coax their vision, even when they’re unsure how to articulate it. Processing and construing author feedback is also critical.
Carly’s professional background is nothing if not awe-striking. She attended the North Carolina State School of Design, and moved to New York upon graduation. Between 2006 and 2011, she worked for Martha Stewart in the role of Corporate & Television Art Director. There, she handled provided art direction on ad campaigns and photoshoots for The Martha Stewart Show, and designed event collateral and signage. Between 2014 and 2017, she served as the Retail Merchandising Art Director for L’oreal-owned haircare brand, Redken. She developed merchandising strategies for the brand and effectively built the department from the ground up.
Other career highlights include: packaging design for Peter Thomas Roth, off-air graphics for Food Network, and packaging design for Bath & Body Works. Past clients include NYMag.com, Redbook magazine, and The Knot magazine. Carly names [insert artist(s) or designer(s)] as artistic and aesthetic influences
